After Your Hair Extension Installation: 7-Day Do's and Don'ts (Hair Salon Hair Extensions)

By Hair Luxe by LauraD | September 19, 2026

I install up to 5 bundles in a 120 to 180 minute appointment, and the first thing I tell you in my chair in Fontana is simple: give those bonds time to set. That means no washing and no heavy sweating for at least 48 to 72 hours. Do that one thing, and the rest of your week feels easy.

After Your Hair Extension Installation: 7-Day Do's and Don'ts for hair salon hair extensions

Quick truth: most extension “problems” in the first week come from water, sweat, and rough brushing too soon. If you follow the steps below, your install stays neat, comfortable, and pretty.

Days 0 to 3: the 48 to 72-hour rule that prevents slipping

Right after your Hair Extension Installation, your job is to keep everything dry and calm. I know Fontana heat is real, especially around Sierra Lakes when you’re running around for school drop-offs or weekend sports. But these first couple days matter.

Days 0 to 3 do’s: keep your hair dry, keep your hands out of the bonds, and keep brushing gentle.

Do this

  • Skip washing for 48 to 72 hours. Even “just a rinse” can soften adhesive and cause early slippage.
  • Keep workouts light. A walk is fine. Anything that makes you sweat at the scalp, wait it out.
  • Sleep smart. Loose, low braid or low ponytail. Silk pillowcase if you have it. Less friction means less tangling.

Don’t do this

  • No sauna, steam room, or super hot showers where your scalp gets damp.
  • Don’t pick at the bonds or “test” them with your fingers. That’s how you create looseness that wasn’t there.
  • Don’t use heavy oils at the root area. Oils and bonds don’t mix.

Days 4 to 7: washing, heat styling, and staying cute in Fontana heat

Once you’re past the first 48 to 72 hours, you can get back to normal. Just keep it intentional. Fontana’s hot, dry summers can push you toward extra dry shampoo, extra heat, and extra sun. Those are all manageable if you’re consistent.

Your first wash matters

Use a lightweight, sulfate-free cleanser. Focus shampoo on your scalp. Let the suds rinse through the lengths instead of scrubbing the extensions. Condition mid-length to ends only. Then rinse well. Leftover product buildup near bonds is a common reason installs start feeling “gunky” or tangly.

Blow-dry the root area

Air-drying sounds gentle, but staying damp at the root can lead to matting and extra shedding. After washing, towel-blot (no rough twisting), then blow-dry your scalp area first. You can keep the heat moderate. Use a leave-in heat protectant before hot tools.

Real talk on longevity: hair extensions can last a long time when you keep bonds clean, brush daily, and come in for maintenance on schedule. The downside of hair extensions is usually avoidable, things like tangling, tension, or slipping when aftercare gets skipped.

The daily routine I want you doing in Sierra Lakes (it takes 5 minutes)

If you do nothing else all week, do this: brush gently every day and keep product placement clean. A lot of my Sierra Lakes clients are busy commuters and parents. You don’t need a 12-step routine. You need the right habits.

Brushing

Use a soft loop brush or extension brush. Hold the hair near the root with one hand for support, then work from ends up. Do it at least once a day, and more if it’s windy or you wore a hoodie.

Sleeping

Loose, low braid or low ponytail every night. Silk pillowcase helps a lot with friction and frizz. If you wake up tangly, don’t panic. Mist with water or a light leave-in on the mid-lengths and brush gently.

Sun, sweat, and dry shampoo

Dry shampoo is fine, but keep it light and cleanse it out when you wash. And in Fontana sun, protect your color and hair with a hat when you can. Sun plus heat tools can make extension hair feel dry faster.

Swimming, chlorine, and salt: the 2-week rule I stick to

I recommend avoiding chlorinated pools and salty water for at least two weeks after your install. Water exposure plus friction can rough up the hair and stress the bonds.

If you have to swim anyway, do it the safer way:

  • Wet your hair first with clean water so it doesn’t soak up as much pool or ocean water.
  • Wear a swim cap if you can.
  • Rinse immediately after and brush gently once you’re out.

And if you’re in and out of the car for sports in Sierra Lakes, keep a claw clip and a soft scrunchie in your bag. It’s a small thing, but it prevents that “helmet hair” tangling at the nape.

When to text me, and when to book your 1 to 2-week check

A little scalp awareness is normal the first couple days. What I don’t want you doing is waiting weeks if something feels off. If you feel pinching, consistent soreness in one spot, or you notice actual slipping, reach out. I’d rather take a quick look and fix a small issue than have you babying it at home.
